G.K Chesterton stated, “Let us say, for the sake of simplicity, a fence or gate was erected across a road. The more modern type of reformer goes up to it and says, "I don't see the use of this; let us clear it away." In short, he was communicating, “Do not take down the fence until you know the reason why it was put up.” Did you know there are all types of moral and spiritual fences that God has ingrained in us and in society? First, is our conscience. The conscience is very mysterious due to its immaterial nature. However, our conscience gives us a sense of right and wrong. Yet, it can be overridden by our will and “seared” (1 Tim 4:2).  For instance, a fence that God has erected is no sex before marriage. Why? Is He trying to keep us from having “fun”? No. He knows it’s more than a physical act; it is spiritual (1 Cor. 6:16). He knows every child needs a mom and a dad. He knows random sex can damage our emotions, psyche, and potentially our physical bodies if we contract a disease. Sadly, he knows it can lead to blood sacrifice through abortion. Yet, we as a society, pose as if we are wiser by wanting to remove this fence from society. As you probably already know, there are scores of fences. Whether it’s, homosexuality, murder, lying, or etc, we as humans seem to think by removing the fences that are etched in our soul and in society, we will be free, when in reality we are being enslaved. I, by no means, am trying to pronounce hypocritical judgment on anybody. I, too, am infected with the depraved nature of sin that has the propensity to deceive me to do things that I ought not (Romans 7). But thanks be to God, He has given me His Spirit to stand my ground and fight against the vicious pull of sin. Let’s stand together and respect the objective fences that our Creator and Lord, Jesus Christ has been placed in us. Yes, it is easier said than done. However, there is strength in numbers, by which I mean we need to support, encourage, and at times reprove one another. I am in the fight with you. Blessings to all!
